“I would like to see Crowd Sourced eLearning and a move away from the complex pricing structures that exist”

The latest advances in LMS technology and the major trends for e-learning in the coming months. What are the main innovations applied to training technologies in 2016? What should improve the elearning industry to solve current needs of corporate training? Interview with Mark Taggart, CEO - Coach & Mentor at Create eLearning.

Mark is a serial technology entrepreneur and investor who helps organizations grow quickly and profitably by implementing repeatable, easy to execute strategies that generate qualified leads, faster closing times and happier clients.

He has been working with the brightest lights in the Clinical Trials technology industry since 1999, amassing great experience and wisdom. In 2011 he created Patient-Reminders.com. A novel, cloud based messaging and alert app for the Clinical Trials industry. This platform was used by the US Govt. CDC and proven to significantly improve dosing compliance, patient retention and adherence using SMS/Text alerts. In June 2013, Cenduit acquired and integrated the Patient Reminders application to their CIRT2 platform. Adding Patient Retention and Compliance to their superb Patient Randomisation, Drug Management Supply Systems.

In 2014 Mark became an investor in www.Create-eLearning.com an online LMS platform for Instructors, organizations and Freelancers.

What are the latest advances in learning management system (LMS) technology?

In my view its:

1. Morphing

  • The meshing of disparate types of learning, coaching/mentoring, support for file types and the awesome technological innovation that's going on in this exciting industry.
  • The many, very cool content creation tools/ apps like Prezi, SlideShare, Claro and video, line art, animation tools and so on. These help people to build engaging low-cost content that works.
  • The ability to leverage great knowledge that exists and build short ‘how to’ video selfies, using a simple GoPro.
  • More and more of these tools/ apps harness the power of an iPad camera or are stand-alone apps, creating local iPad content. The logical step is that the iPad and tablet becomes the tool to load content into our platform. This enables learning materials to be updated and released quickly – often within 24 hours.
  • The boundaries of LMS, eLearning, Webinars, ad-hoc coaching, meetings, classrooms and so on, blur and merge. This is great news for all stakeholders, especially the Creatives and the Finance Director.

2. Big Data

Training/coaching activities produce a great deal of big data. By graphically representing this data, and tying it to automated workflows and messaging/alert templates, we make life easier for administrators who have to drive adherence and compliance.

3. Off-grid and offline working

Because alert/reminder messages go to Smartphones, courses that have been designed with mobile in mind can be taken in downtime, such as on trains and planes where this dead time can be put to good use.

While many think the web is ‘always on’, try living off-grid with little or no access, or limits, to plans. We feel that intelligent online/ offline, off-grid capability with support for every language, font and timezone is paramount.

4. It's not all about the money!

As the song says:

It's not about the money, money, money.

We don't need your money, money, money.

We just wanna make the world dance.

Forget about the price tag.

Ain't about the (uh) ch-ch-ching ch-ching.

Ain't about the (yeah) bl-bling-bl-bling.

Wanna make the world dance,

Forget about the price tag (OK)

Link -  LOVE THE SONG!  -  Obviously money keeps us in business and builds products that rock - but we want to aid everyone in the channel.

5. Cultural

The majority of people on our planet need access to systems that are:

  • Localised
  • Affordable, highly scaleable and easy for them to use locally

So, what might be ‘buttons’ to me is a ‘King’s Ransom’ to another. Let’s support the little guys and share the love.

What are the major trends for e-learning in the coming months?

In addition to my previous comments, we – at Create eLearning - are playing with virtual reality (VR). VR has a long way to go - but it’s exciting. We see a time when VR will be low cost, easy-to-build and will create footage that doesn't make the user seasick. We’re ready and would love to play with people wanting to push this harder and faster.

We already support gaming standards like Unity and HTML5. We would like to work closely with those that make it easy to build games.

On the same theme, there’s the strengthening of data standards for easy plug-and-play into other systems. Simply add in your credentials to one system and we connect, transmitting data back and forth where appropriate.

What are the main innovations applied to training technologies in 2016?

That’s a good question. The answer is, it’s hard to tell. There is so much noise in the space.

From our standpoint it’s all about acting as a central hub - pulling in files, and making it easy to build classes (for free).

Another innovation is helping people to make money and generally getting clunky, hard-to-use technology out of the way!

What should improve the elearning industry to solve current needs of corporate training?

I’d like to see "Crowd Sourced eLearning" (you heard it here first, hopefully) and a move away from the complex pricing structures that exist.

Portability would be nice too.

I understand that authors and publishers need to hang onto their precious IP. But really?! My records and CDs went years ago. I love Spotify, SoundCloud, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.

If all the eLearning classes ever created were stacked end-to-end they would reach Mars. We have enough quality content.

Let’s start making it highly available so that:

1. It’s easy and transparent to access

2. People stop being greedy

3. Make it so that it plays nicely

How do social networks impact in the training process?

They impact on training in a huge way. It’s so huge that it’s probably best if we discuss this properly via social media. :-)

Why do you say that the Create eLearning Platform is an LMS that claims to be like Netflix for training and coaching?

Because my four-year old children and their granny can all use Netflix.

I go from one device to another with ease and it works just as I would like.

There is a vast amount of clever things happening behind the scenes that have taken super-geek-heroes to fix that we just don’t have a clue about.

It’s a bit like Apple. At Create eLearning, we spend a lot of time teaching our technical superstars to stop thinking like geeks. We have an acronym that we use when we spot poor user design: WSJBILTNHFW!

In other words – ‘Would Steve Jobs Build It Like This - NO HE WOULDNT! We put a lot of time into this – and into our control processes.

Could you share some characteristics of the most prominent projects done by Create eLearning?

I’m really excited about how a spin-out project from the Metropolitan Police is working. Awesome cutting edge projects like ‘Police Now’ (graduate recruitment) allow us to get our creative hats on and push boundaries hard.

Please see their videos explainer of the incredible things they are doing. This is awesome:

What plans has the company in relation to Latin America?

First it's a part of the World that's on my bucket list to take my family on an extended adventure - like we did in Australia and New Zealand a while back. We’ll bring our paragliders, skateboards, stand-up paddle board and kites surf gear to your amazing beaches - and enjoy the incredible countries and meet the amazing people.

From a practical standpoint our plans include providing support.

1. Through good design, we have local language support. This includes the notion of support for countries and time zones. Moreover, our platform can be translated to any Unicode and Non-Unicode language with tremendous ease. We can perform the translations using our partners, at minimal cost, or we can work with our local friends and enable translations for free.

2. Affordability - Free models with revenue-sharing through to a low-cost LMS.

3. An enabling suite of tools/technology that helps the local entrepreneurs to make money serving local needs/market.

4. Marketplace tools built into the platform make the monetization flows a possibility without upfront costs. In other words, when our content partners make a sale, so do we.
